To Kegel or Not: That is the Question!!

Pelvic floor problems are prevalent in more than 2/3 of women with LBP/PGP, and 1/3 of men with LBP.

Is this an important fact affecting your outcomes for chronic LBP?

Course Description

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) can include increased tone and decreased tone muscle problems. It is not all about Kegels! How can you tell if your patient is over-recruiting their pelvic floor if you cannot do an internal exam? Not all clinicians want to perform this type of exam, or it may not be in your scope of practice. Learn what the evidence says about linking pelvic floor dysfunction to chronic low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, and hip pain, and learn what you can do about it in your practice. Help your patients to regain control of these important muscles! Sexual function and bladder/bowel function are arguably some of the most important activities of daily living that your patients need to recover. Don’t let your discomfort be the barrier to your patient’s recovery; we will make it fun and non-threatening!

Support resources are included in the cost of this course.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the relevance of Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) when treating orthopaedic conditions- specifically LBP, SIJ dysfunction, PGP, and hip pain
  • Learn basic anatomy of the pelvic floor musculature and physiology of the lower urinary tract system (LUTS)
  • Understand pelvic floor conditions as they relate to a weak pelvic floor and an overactive pelvic floor
  • Learn how to ask patients important questions about sexual function
  • Learn non-internal management strategies for pelvic floor retraining
  • Create an individualized exercise program and progression for clients with increased or decreased pelvic floor tone
  • Use behavioural techniques to help retrain a variety of dysfunctions of the urinary and bowel system
  • Practice externally driven techniques for assessing and treating pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Understand when to refer to a specially trained physiotherapist for incontinence, prolapse, and pelvic pain

Audience: This course is open to all healthcare and wellness professionals.

Prerequisite: None

Date/Time: February 7, 2026, from 10:30am-6:30pm ET (Toronto). Please convert to your local time zone.

Lab assistants will be available to answer questions and ensure a supportive learning environment.

If you are unable or uncomfortable acting as a patient model for any reason, you are required to bring someone (such as a friend, family member, or colleague) to practice on, as there is no guarantee that another participant will volunteer to act as a model more than once. Please notify info@pelvichealthsolutions.ca if you will be bringing someone to practice on.

This course is designed to evaluate the pelvic floor by learning specific examination and treatment techniques for these conditions, including vaginal and anal palpation. This course includes two days of live-online lecture, featuring comprehensive videos of all techniques, an in-person practical session, and access to a 1-day recorded course that focuses on understanding the impact of trauma on physical and emotional health and the barriers trauma may present to a patient’s experiences in healthcare, particularly pelvic floor physiotherapy. We recommend viewing the recorded course prior to the start of the live-online lecture.

Over the duration of the recorded trauma course, we will explore the two most common types of traumas impacting pelvic health – childhood sexual abuse and birth trauma. We will explore how physiotherapists can apply a trauma-informed lens to their pelvic practice resulting in greater awareness, understanding and sensitivity for patients identifying as survivors of trauma. Through this increased sensitivity, physiotherapists, and other health professionals, will better support their patients and in turn, observe higher levels of trust, adherence, and cooperation from their client base.

This section of the course will discuss/include:

  • Why is a trauma-informed lens important for healthcare providers?
  • Defining childhood sexual abuse and/or sexual assault
  • How to recognize trauma: Signs and Symptoms
  • Neurobiology of Trauma: How is the brain and emotional functioning affected?
  • How does childhood sexual abuse or sexual assault shape or redefine a patient’s identity, sense of self, and body image?
  • Defining birth trauma
  • How does birth trauma affect pelvic floor recovery?
  • Birth Trauma vs. Post-Partum Mood Disorders: Similarities and Differences
  • Disclosures of Trauma: Appropriate and Inappropriate Responses by Healthcare Workers
  • Coping techniques for patients

Join us for an immersive learning experience, using a trauma-informed lens, that will empower you to provide effective interventions for individuals dealing with pelvic pain.

APTEI: Chronic Pain & Fibromyalgia

This is an in-person, interactive, fun and PRACTICAL course. The learning experience will be incomparable to an on-line course or anything offered through AI :o)

Would you like to read over 1000 TESTIMONIALS?

There are many labels used to describe chronic pain that doesn’t have a clear medical explanation—terms like central sensitization, psychogenic pain, nociplastic pain, and pain system hypersensitivity, just to name a few.

But according to a paper published in the journal PAIN, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) recommends a simpler and more unified term: Primary Chronic Pain.

Upon completion of the program, you will be confident in differentiating between Secondary versus Primary Chronic Pain.

Primary Chronic Pain is often accompanied by emotional distress—things like anxiety, stress, grief, and anger.

The primary focus of this course is to address Primary Chronic Pain in conditions such as persistent spinal pain, persistent WAD, Fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

Your “homework” prior to attending the course is to

1) LOGIN / REGISTER yourself on www.ThePainTruth.org

2) Go through the home page of  www.ThePainTruth.org and view the videos

3) View the INTRO videos on www.ThePainTruth.org/intro-videos

4) Complete the questionnaires on www.ThePainTruth.org/questionnaires (pretend to be a patient)

APTEI: Cervical & Thoracic Spine

This is an in-person, interactive, fun and PRACTICAL course. The learning experience will be incomparable to an on-line course or anything offered through AI :o)

Would you like read over 1000 TESTIMONIALS?

This course will enable you to gain a practical knowledge of the possible anatomical and psychosocial factors leading to persistent neck, thoracic region and rib cage pain. Once the pain classification is identified, optimal management options of acute and persistent cervical whiplash associated disorders (WAD) will be clearly reviewed.

So what does the evidence (as of 2025) thus far tell us regarding optimal management of WADs?

  • Patient re-assurance ++
  • Pain Education
  • Maintenance of activity levels, but not too much
  • General exercise program
  • Specific exercise programs focusing on neck and shoulders
  • Encouragement of coping strategies
  • Simple analgesics

Although the research papers make the management sound so simple, we all know it is not so easy. This course will help you become more confident in your treatment of acute and persistent neck and thoracic spine pain knowing that you’re providing the best treatments based on the best available evidence.
